Why Your Wedding Stationery Is More Important Than You Think

It sets the tone for the whole event.

While your venue and wedding day outfits are of course super important, your wedding stationery also holds a surprising amount of significance and importance.

Your stationery brings your wedding full circle. It is both the first and last thing guests touch, and it is a powerful way to set the tone for how your wedding will look and feel. Your stationery lets guests know what to expect. It communicates key information such as where your wedding is happening, what time it starts (and ends), and what your guests should wear. But it also shares information about you as a couple: your personalities and your love story.

As your stationery is the thread that ties together the run up to your wedding and the day itself, there are so many opportunities to share personal touches: save the dates, invitations, welcome signs, orders of service, escort cards and table plans, you name it, there’s so many touchpoints where you can share details: favourite songs or TV shows, in-jokes, your love story… all these little touches help your guests feel more connected to you, which makes your day all the more special.

As your stationery runs through so many parts of your wedding, it’s important that it is cohesive. It doesn’t need to fully match if you don’t want it to (after all, your wedding style can evolve over the planning process!) but it should feel consistent and work with your wedding design and styling.

How Important are Wedding Invitations and Stationery?

When planning your wedding, there’s so much to think about and your stationery can sometimes fall down the list. But don’t forget, your stationery does the heavy lifting in your celebration: it handles all the logistics around your wedding, but also gives clues as to the style of celebration you will have too, and what kind of fun your guests will have: a beach wedding is a very different affair to a black-tie invitation!

Your Wedding Stationery Sets the Tone for the Event

I firmly believe that your stationery sets the tone for your wedding. It gives your guests an idea of how they should dress, and what kind of day your wedding will be. This is because your wedding stationery is the first thing people see and touch when it comes to your wedding. The colours, patterns, design and messaging are all clues and cues for your guests as to what to expect on the day. It’s a wonderful little teaser, gets everyone excited, and is a hugely valuable source of information for your friends and family.

Your Wedding Stationery Contains Valuable Information

The main function of the invitations of course is to communicate essential information: who, what, where and when. Your guests will need this information ahead of time so they can make plans: book hotels, take time off work if need be, or organise childcare. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small or large affair, this information is vital.

The way in which you communicate this information is also valuable. The look and tone of the invitations are an indication of the degree of formality (or otherwise) of the event they will be attending. The use of colour in the invitations can be used to convey information about the styling throughout the day, while the tone of the text is a clear indicator of the formality of the event: a card that reads :put your glad rags on, it’s time to party!” will hint at a laid back, informal affair, while “we request the pleasure of your company” suggests a more formal event. All of this information is helpful for your guests.

Your Wedding Stationery Is an Opportunity for Personalisation

While your wedding stationery first and foremost needs to convey key information, your invitations are a wonderful opportunity to showcase your style & personality as a couple. And do what makes you happiest: go bold and play with colour if vibrant shades are your jam, customise your invitations with a beautiful venue illustration if it’s a special place for you, and make the language as formal or informal as it feels appropriate for you. Your wedding is a celebration of your love, and your wedding stationery should reflect that.
